PSYCHODYNAMIC THERAPY FOR COUPLES
Understand the roots, not just the repeat. Virtual therapy for couples across Massachusetts.
The patterns you're stuck in didn't start with your partner.
Most couples come to therapy focused on what's happening right now, the fight, the distance, the thing that keeps going wrong. But the way you react in conflict, what makes you shut down, what makes you push, what feels unbearable to hear, was often shaped long before this relationship began. Psychodynamic therapy looks at those roots directly.
Rather than just addressing the surface pattern, this approach helps you understand where it came from, so you're not just managing a reaction, you're actually changing it.
Why psychodynamic therapy works:
Connects present-day conflict to its actual origin, not just its trigger
Builds real, lasting insight instead of surface-level coping strategies
Helps you understand your partner's patterns as clearly as your own
how i can help
I use psychodynamic insight to help you understand not just what you do, but why.
In our work together, we'll look at the experiences, relationships, and early patterns that shaped how you each learned to handle closeness, conflict, and trust. Often, what looks like a flaw in your relationship is actually an old survival strategy showing up in a new context, one that made sense once, but doesn't serve you anymore.
I pair this approach with Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), which gives us a clear map of your relationship's cycle in the present. Together, these approaches work on two levels at once: understanding where a pattern came from, and changing how it plays out between you now.
This isn't about assigning blame to your past. It's about finally making sense of yourself, so you can show up differently with the person you love.
imagine if you…
Understood why certain things hit you so hard
Real clarity on the "why" behind your own reactions, not just frustration that you have them.
Recognized old patterns before they took over
The ability to catch an old response before it runs the show.
Related to your partner's history with more compassion
Seeing your partner's patterns as understandable, not just difficult.

Common questions about psychodynamic couples therapy
-
No. We'll spend real time in the present, in your actual relationship and what's happening right now. The past comes in as a way to understand the present more clearly, not as the main focus.
-
It shares some roots, but in couples work, psychodynamic therapy is applied specifically to how your histories interact with each other, not just explored individually.
-
EFT focuses on the emotional cycle happening between you right now. Psychodynamic therapy adds depth by exploring where each of your roles in that cycle originally came from. I use both together, so you get insight and real, present-day change.
